Journal History
Justitia Nova: Indonesian Journal of Modern Law was established in 2025 and is published by Institut Miftahul Huda Al Azhar, Kota Banjar, Indonesia. The journal was founded as an international, peer-reviewed, fully Open Access scholarly journal dedicated to the dissemination of rigorous legal research and the advancement of contemporary legal scholarship. From its establishment, the journal has sought to provide an academic platform for research addressing emerging legal issues from national, regional, comparative, and international perspectives, while maintaining principles of editorial independence, research integrity, transparency, and responsible scholarly communication.
The journal commenced publication with Volume 1, No. 1 in June 2025, marking the inaugural issue of Justitia Nova: Indonesian Journal of Modern Law. This initial publication established the journal's editorial and publishing framework and provided the foundation for its subsequent development as an international legal journal. The journal subsequently continued its biannual publication schedule, with issues released in June and December, in accordance with its established publication frequency.
During its early development, Justitia Nova progressively strengthened its editorial and publishing processes to support the quality, consistency, and integrity of its scholarly output. The journal implemented a structured editorial assessment and Double-Blind Peer Review process, supported by independent reviewers with relevant academic expertise. Manuscripts are evaluated with consideration of originality, methodological rigor, scholarly contribution, legal significance, relevance to the journal's aims and scope, and compliance with applicable publication ethics.
The journal has also developed formal policies governing research integrity, publication ethics, authorship, peer review, conflicts of interest, plagiarism, artificial intelligence, corrections and retractions, complaints and appeals, Open Access, copyright and licensing, and digital preservation. These policies are intended to provide a transparent framework for authors, reviewers, editors, and readers and to ensure that the journal's publishing practices remain consistent with recognized principles of responsible scholarly publishing.
An important part of the journal's development has been the strengthening of its international orientation. Justitia Nova publishes scholarly articles in English and welcomes contributions from researchers and academic institutions from different countries and disciplinary backgrounds. The journal encourages comparative, interdisciplinary, doctrinal, empirical, and socio-legal research addressing contemporary challenges in law, justice, governance, human rights, technological transformation, environmental regulation, legal reform, and related fields. The increasing diversity of author affiliations and research perspectives forms part of the journal's continuing effort to broaden the international scope of its scholarly communication.
Since its establishment, the journal has continued to improve its digital publishing infrastructure. Published articles are assigned Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) to facilitate persistent identification, citation, and discoverability. The journal also maintains digital archiving and preservation practices to support the long-term accessibility of published scholarly content. Its Open Access model enables readers to access published research without subscription barriers, thereby supporting wider dissemination and academic engagement.
The development of Justitia Nova is understood as a continuous process rather than a fixed achievement. The Editorial Board therefore regularly reviews its editorial procedures, peer-review practices, publication policies, digital infrastructure, and international collaboration in order to identify opportunities for improvement. Particular attention is given to maintaining editorial independence, strengthening reviewer and editorial expertise, improving transparency, promoting research integrity, and enhancing the scholarly quality and international relevance of published articles.
As the journal enters subsequent volumes and continues to expand its scholarly network, Justitia Nova: Indonesian Journal of Modern Law remains committed to sustainable and responsible development. Its long-term objective is to serve as a credible international forum for rigorous legal scholarship and to contribute meaningfully to contemporary debates concerning law, justice, governance, human rights, technology, environmental challenges, and legal transformation.
