Conflict of Interest (COI)

Justitia Nova: Indonesian Journal of Modern Law is committed to ensuring transparency, fairness, and integrity throughout the editorial and publication process. All participants involved in scholarly publishing—including authors, editors, reviewers, and the publisher—are expected to disclose any actual, potential, or perceived conflicts of interest that may influence the objectivity of their work or editorial decisions.

Purpose

This policy aims to:

  • Promote transparency and accountability in scholarly publishing.

  • Protect the integrity and credibility of published research.

  • Ensure objective editorial and peer review decisions.

  • Prevent undue influence arising from financial, professional, institutional, or personal relationships.

Responsibilities of Authors

Authors must disclose any circumstances that could reasonably be perceived as influencing the conduct, interpretation, or reporting of their research.

Potential conflicts of interest may include, but are not limited to:

  • Financial support from commercial organizations.

  • Research grants or sponsorship.

  • Employment or consultancy relationships.

  • Ownership of shares or intellectual property rights.

  • Personal, academic, or professional relationships.

  • Institutional affiliations that may influence the research.

If no conflicts of interest exist, authors should state:

  • "The authors declare that they have no conflict of interest."

Responsibilities of Reviewers

Reviewers are expected to disclose any conflict of interest before accepting a review assignment.

Reviewers should decline the invitation to review if they:

  • Have collaborated closely with any of the authors.

  • Work at the same institution as the authors where impartiality may reasonably be questioned.

  • Have financial or personal interests related to the manuscript.

  • Believe they cannot provide an objective and independent assessment.

Reviewers must maintain confidentiality throughout the review process and must not use unpublished information for personal or professional advantage.

Responsibilities of Editors

Editors shall manage manuscripts fairly and independently.

Editors must not participate in editorial decisions if they:

  • Are authors or co-authors of the submitted manuscript.

  • Have personal, professional, or financial relationships with the authors.

  • Have any competing interests that could influence editorial judgment.

When a conflict of interest exists, responsibility for the manuscript shall be delegated to another qualified editor.

Responsibilities of the Publisher

The publisher supports editorial independence and shall not interfere with editorial decisions based on commercial, institutional, political, or personal interests.

Editorial decisions are based solely on academic quality, originality, ethical compliance, and relevance to the journal's aims and scope.

Management of Conflicts of Interest

When a conflict of interest is identified, the Editorial Office may take appropriate actions, including:

  • Requesting additional disclosure from the relevant party.

  • Assigning alternative reviewers or editors.

  • Requesting clarification from the authors.

  • Publishing conflict of interest statements where appropriate.

  • Rejecting or retracting manuscripts when undisclosed conflicts compromise the integrity of the publication.

Transparency

Conflict of interest disclosures contribute to transparency but do not automatically prevent publication. Editorial decisions are made based on the overall academic merit, integrity, and ethical compliance of the submitted work.

Policy Review

This policy is periodically reviewed to ensure continued alignment with international publishing standards, the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), and evolving best practices in scholarly publishing.
